False Alarm

Yesterday my body felt "off" all day.  Baby boy hadn't moved much like he usually does, and I was leaking some fluid.  At first, I really didn't think anything of it.  But when I got home and talked through all of my symptoms with Daniel, he went into instant panic mode.  Apparently, all of the reading up I had him do early in the pregnancy proved to be helpful last night.  He remembered that toward the end if your water breaks slowly, causing the amniotic fluid to leak, the baby could be in distress, even if momma isn't having any contractions.  I went through the symptoms again....leaking (and a bit brown tinged, which can be a sign baby has passed his first stool), braxton hicks contractions, feeling "off", baby not moving in over a three-hour period, and some menstrual-like cramping.  Oh my gosh....am I in labor??!?

Finally, I was convinced that I should called the mid-wife on call.  She listened to my symptoms, asked me a ton of questions, and with the answers told us to get straight to the hospital, and don't pass go. :)  She would meet us at labor and delivery.  We should bring our bags.  I even asked her if I was able to take a shower since it had been a really long day at work...her quick response was, "NO!  If you're going to have the baby tonight, you can shower when you get here.  Just get here!"

Luckily earlier that night we took our 37 week picture of the belly, which is something I don't want to forget to do before we leave for the hospital.  I got out the video camera and pointed it straight at Daniel.  I joked about how ridiculous it was that we were on our way to what was probably a first time parent false alarm.  On the way to the hospital, I tried calling my family....nobody answered. haha  I tried again, and my mom called me back.  She laughed at my brushing it off as a "false alarm" because when she was pregnant with me, she thought the same thing one night (even left the porch light on because she just KNEW they would be back and would need to be able to see to get back in the house)....and she didn't make it back to the house, I made it into the world.  Ok...officially thinking this could be it!

We got to the hospital and they immediately had me change into a gown and got my belly hooked up to a fetal distress monitor.

It took a second, and some very uncomfortable maneuvering on my part (in the most uncomfortable position known to man!) and we got his heartbeat to come up.  It was running a little high, until he finally moved.  Then everything leveled back out nicely and the nurse was relieved.  They told me I had to stay in that position for the next hour so they could watch for the necessary spikes in his movement and heart rate.  An hour?  In this awful position on this awful bed?  Ok, anything for baby.  Meanwhile, they tested me for any amniotic positive fluid leakage.  That came back negative.

So after hours of monitoring and test results, we were sent home with well wishes that they won't see us again for two week or so.  At least we got a practice run, right?  We wouldn't be "first time parents" without the token false alarm. :)
